Dissolving Filler: What To Know

Dissolving filler involves injecting an enzyme called hyaluronidase into an area that was previously treated with hyaluronic acid fillers like Restylane or Juvéderm.

There are many different situations in which using hyaluronidase might be appropriate. You may get filler frequently, have filler migration, or be unhappy with your results. In that case, it’s probably a good idea to talk to your injector about dissolving before you get filler again. Here’s what you should know before your appointment:

HYALURONIDASE ONLY WORKS ON HYALURONIC ACID FILLERS

Since hyaluronidase is an enzyme, it specifically targets and breaks down hyaluronic acid molecules. That means that this treatment is only effective on fillers that are made up primarily of hyaluronic acid. The good news is that HA fillers are by far the most popular choice these days, and if you have had filler recently, chances are it falls into this category.

YOU CAN’T GET FILLER IMMEDIATELY AFTER DISSOLVING

While dissolving lip filler is a relatively straightforward process, you will have to wait for about two weeks before getting filler again. The reason for this is pretty simple: you don’t want to inject a hyaluronic acid filler into an area where you have just injected an enzyme to dissolve it. (That would be a big waste of filler!).

It’s also not uncommon to have some mild swelling and bruising after dissolving filler. So, it’s best to wait a few weeks before scheduling that follow-up appointment with your injector.

HYALURONIDASE IS WIDELY AVAILABLE

While it may not be a topic that comes up frequently in conversation, dissolving lip filler is a fairly common practice and should be available just about anywhere that offers injectables. Any reputable, licensed injector will have hyaluronidase on hand at all times anyway, because it is used to help reverse a potential complication called a vascular occlusion.

HYALURONIDASE WORKS FAST

Some effects of hyaluronidase can be seen immediately, and you should be able to see the final results of dissolving your filler within about 48 hours. That means that hyaluronic acid fillers can be quickly & easily reversed if you aren’t happy with your results, and it’s one of the main reasons they have become so popular.
